Knapp Associates began in May of 1996 with the early retirement of company owner Alton E Knapp Jr. from the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation's Flood Protection Bureau after 22 years of service. Mr. Knapp started with the Bureau as a Flood Control Construction Specialist covering numerous USA Corps of Engineers flood control projects in the state's southern tier. In 1976 Mr. Knapp transferred from the Flood Control Section to the Floodplain Management Section and relocated to DEC's Central Office in Albany where he remained for 20 years.
Upon separation from the state, Mr. Knapp felt that the 20+ years of program experience he had gained should be made available to benefit developers, lenders, insurance agents, home owners, municipalities and other individuals involved in floodplain management and the National Flood Insurance Program NFIP.
"Our goal is to put floodplain management and the requirements of the NFIP on the ground where it can accomplish its goal of flood damage reduction and at the same time accomodate the development goals of our clients to the maximum extent possible".
In December of 2000, Mr. Knapp received national certification from the Association of State Floodplain Managers ( ASFPM ) as a Certified Floodplauin Manager ( C.F.M. ).
